Bill Clinton in the dark

As delicious irony would have it, Mr. Bill “I-didn’t-have-sex-with-that-woman” Clinton was forced to give his exclusive fund-raising speech about energy policy in the dark last night.  It seems that despite the technological advances of modern man, with electricity and information being delivered at the flip of a switch, even Mr. Clinton or his well-monied cronies couldn’t find the means to control the power grid in Brentwood.

Apparently slick Willy was unfazed by the surrounding darkness, even as the palace servants all ran to get candles and some battery operated lanterns.  So there he sat poolside, artificially lit up by unforeseen circumstance, talking from the shadows, barely audible without his reverb and microphone.

But what did he talk about?  What sagacity might he have imparted to the glitterati during that late summer evening?  Did he want to delve into the Heideggerian idea of what the meaning of “is” is,  or did he perhaps have the more prosaic agenda of promoting his wife’s run for office in 2008?

Regardless of the purported content of his talk, regardless of the hidden winks, the furtive glances, and the rest of such mummeries as regularly practiced by those involved in the dark arts of politics, the picture of Mr. Clinton talking in the dark is an apt metaphor of his political life and the fate he hopes to impose on many souls.

May God spare us from another Clinton presidency…
