EU schemes to divide Jerusalem

Ha’aretz exposes Swedish-led proposal to divide Jerusalem

Sweden is poised to wind up its six-month term in the rotating presidency of the European Union by tabling a resolution next week which calls for recognizing east Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, and suggesting that the European Union would recognize a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood.

The Israeli daily Ha’aretz claimed on Tuesday that it had obtained a draft of the declaration authored by Sweden, which is expected to be introduced at a meeting in Brussels of EU foreign ministers on December 7 convened to discuss the peace process and update the body’s Middle East policy.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry denounced the expected EU move. “After the important steps taken by the government of Israel to enable the resumption of negotiations with the Palestinians, the European Union must now exert pressure on the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table,” the statement said, referring notably to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu placing a 10-month freeze on West Bank settlement construction. “Steps like those being led by Sweden only contribute to the opposite effect.”
